Liz Miele has been a friend of mine for the past twelve years and she’s one of my best friends of all-time. She is a comic and one of the most entertaining, interesting, and incredible people I’ve ever met.
Liz is originally from New Jersey and she began doing stand-up at the age of sixteen in New York City. At age eighteen she was profiled in The New Yorker magazine. At 22, she appeared on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham. She’s recently appeared on Comedy Central’s This Week at the Comedy Cellar, NPR’s Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!, Hulu’s Coming to the Stage, and more.
In this episode, Liz and I discuss how we met in acting class and began forming our friendship after I chased her into it, how the topic of mental illness has been something she’s had to deal with in her family her entire life, the ins and outs of what therapy has looked like and done for us both, how she watches her emotions so she can better control her reactions, the importance of finding a balance between numbing out and sitting in your emotions, and more.
The Pain Points We Explore In This Episode:
How discovering stand-up helped Liz with her depression as a teenager
Why stand-up can feel like never-ending high school
How genetics and an overwhelming home life led to her depression
Her experience with having a constant feeling of anger before starting therapy
The importance for Liz in creating safe hours and spaces during her flare ups with depression
